Our multidisciplinary approach
Working together as one team
When you become a San patient, you will be cared for by a team of highly skilled experts from doctors to nurses, and other specialists who will guide and help you through diagnosis, treatment and recovery.
They will be your personal multidisciplinary team (MDT) and they are highly specialised in specific types of cancer. MDTs enhance communication between healthcare professionals, improve the quality of care and provide the patient with confidence that they are obtaining multiple opinions regarding their condition.
The San currently has MDTs that specialise in:
- Breast Cancer
- Endocrine Cancer
- Gastro Intestinal Cancer
- Gynaecological Oncology
- Haematologic Malignancy
- Lung Cancer
- NeuroOncological Cancer
- Prostate Cancer
- Skin Cancer, Sarcoma and Melanoma
- Urological Cancer
How do MDTs work?
The members of your MDT will meet fortnightly to discuss the diagnosis and staging of your disease. Using evidence-based guidelines, they will plan the best treatment option for you, taking your preferences into account. MDTs meet in a world-class, purpose-built facility where they can easily view and discuss all your results.
Who is on your MDT?
The make-up of your team will depend on your individual situation and needs. MDTs at the San involve health professionals from numerous areas and may include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, social workers, physiotherapists, palliative care specialists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, case managers and cancer support professionals.
