Profile
Assoc Prof Falk graduated MBBS from the University of Sydney in 1979, and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 1986. He completed post-fellowship training in Upper GI Surgery at Concord Hospital between 1986 and 1987, in the UK from 1987 to 1988, the USA in 1988, and Hong Kong in 1990. He is currently Senior Specialist in Upper GI Surgery at Concord Hospital and the previous Head of the Department of Upper Gastro-intestinal Surgery.
Assoc Prof Falk has pursued interests in lymphadenectomy for oesophageal, gastric and pancreatic cancer, and developmental advanced laparoscopy for the past 15 years. He is employing minimally invasive surgery techniques for gastric and oesophageal cancer resection, as well as laparoscopic removal of GIST tumour, gastric and duodenal polyps and pancreatic cysts. Dr Falk has had considerable experience with hiatus hernia and reflux surgery, with more than 2500 cases completed by laparoscopy.
Research
Assoc. Prof. Falk has specific interest in Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Laparoscopy, and in Upper GI cancer. His research interests include Hiatal Hernia Surgery, Gastro-oesophageal Carcinoma, Barretts Oesophagus, Barretts Carcinoma, and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Barretts Oesophagus, and prevention of oesophageal carcinoma. Recent progress has been seen in laryngo-pharyngeal reflux and improved survivals in oesophago-gastric carcinomas by extended resectional techniques. He has completed a review of his personal services of oesophageal resections with a 45% 5 year survival (compared with contemporary services of 20-25%).
