Profile
Dr Mahant is an experienced neurologist with a focus on Movement Disorders - conditions affected by difficulties performing normal movements or the presence of excessive movements. Specific conditions include Parkinson's disease, dystonia, tremor, Wilson's disease, functional neurological disorders, and numerous rare or difficult to diagnose disorders. Neurotherapeutics is an important part of his practice, including the use of botulinum toxin for movement disorders, continuous therapies for Parkinson's (such as medication infusions) and deep brain stimulation (DBS). His main role at Sydney Adventist Hospital is to support DBS surgery.
Research
Dr Mahant completed his medical degree (MBBS), and subsequently a PhD in Medicine, with the University of Sydney. He has had clinical training at Royal Prince Alfred, Royal North Shore and Westmead Hospitals. He completed a Post-doctoral Fellowship at the Toronto Western Hospital (Ontario, Canada) and the University of Toronto in the field of movement disorders and specifically DBS. He has ongoing research in Movement Disorders, including medication trials, neurophysiology, DBS and botulinum toxin.
