Profile

With over 15 years of experience as a consultant nephrologist in a major teaching hospital, Dr Sarah Roxburgh is a Senior Staff Specialist (Renal Medicine/Nephrology) at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) and Visiting Medical Officer at Sydney Adventist Hospital. At RNSH she participates in the high-risk pregnancy team, the general nephrology team and has special interest clinics including rheumatology/renal (lupus and vasculitis associated, kidney disease) and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Her PhD was in diabetic kidney disease (DKD), completed in University College Dublin (molecular mechanisms influencing the progression of renal scar in DKD). Retarding progression of DKD, and chronic kidney disease (CKD), remains a major focus for Sarah in clinical practice.

Dr Roxburgh has an interest in all major areas of nephrology including all dialysis modalities, chronic kidney transplant care, kidney supportive care, refractory hypertensive disorders and glomerulonephritis. Due to her interest in pregnancy, Sarah manages a large cohort of younger women, and particularly a group with IgA nephropathy and other CKD. She has a strong interest in preconception counselling and risk factor modification pre pregnancy, in patients with CKD and/or multiagent hypertension. Management of patients on haemodialysis (home and in centre), management of the patient on peritoneal dialysis, and management of kidney transplant recipients in the long term, are all core parts of Sarah's nephrology practice. Holistic care over a lifetime of managing CKD is key to good nephrological practice, and Sarah is highly aware of this. Sarah is the Clinical Lead for the Renal Supportive Care service for the North Shore Local Health District, and focussed on maintaining high standards of care for patients when they reach the stage where a conservative pathway represents the best approach for them.

Sarah is a Senior Lecturer in Medicine at the University of Sydney, and actively participates in academic and teaching roles for undergraduates and postgraduates.

In addition to private rooms at the Northern Specialist Centre, Sarah sees public nephrology patients on Monday and Wednesday sessions at RNSH Kidney Clinic and the outreach Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital (HKH) Kidney Clinic on Thursdays.

Research

Dr Roxburgh is Principal Investigator (PI) for the RNSH site for the Elderly study (George Institute) and Associate Investigator on multiple clinical trials via the RNSH renal trials unit.
