Profile
Dr Sudarshan Paramsothy is an internationally credentialed and awarded Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist. His practice philosophy involves an evidence-based approach to patient care, tailored to his patient's unique circumstances. He is well versed in and treats all aspects of general gastrointestinal and liver disorders. His subspecialty expertise is inflammatory bowel disease, with other clinical interests including high-quality bowel cancer surveillance and functional GI disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome.
Dr Paramsothy graduated with First Class Honours from UNSW (2005), and was awarded numerous University prizes relating to the medical sciences. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) after completing his specialty training at Concord Hospital, St George Hospital & Liverpool Hospital.
He then undertook a PhD (UNSW), investigating faecal microbiota transplantation in ulcerative colitis. He was awarded an NHMRC Postgraduate Research Scholarship along with national and international grants. His PhD work attracted global recognition with plenary presentations and awards at major international conferences and was ultimately published in the prestigious "Lancet" medical journal.
Dr Paramsothy subsequently was awarded esteemed overseas advanced fellowships at the University of Chicago Medicine (2016-17) and Mount Sinai Hospital, New York (2017-18). Both institutions are world-renowned centres of excellence in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with global leaders in the field.
Dr Paramsothy has attachments at Sydney Adventist Hospital, Macquarie University Hospital and Strathfield Private Hospital. He is also a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Concord Hospital. He is accredited for gastroscopy and colonoscopy by the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
Research
Dr Paramsothy has academic affiliations with the University of Sydney and Macquarie University. He remains active in teaching and research supervision at all levels, including multiple PhD students. His main research interests relate to inflammatory bowel disease, the gastrointestinal microbiota and therapeutic microbial manipulation strategies including faecal microbiota transplantation. He has been awarded an NHMRC Emerging Leadership Investigator Grant to support his research. Given his recognised expertise and publications, Dr Paramsothy often speaks at national and international conferences and is a regular invited peer reviewer for the premier journals in the field.
