Associate Professor Sumit Raniga is a subspecialist orthopaedic shoulder and elbow surgeon with three years of dedicated clinical and research fellowships in world-renowned centres of excellence. He is an outstanding communicator who is trained to provide the highest standard of evidence-based treatment of shoulder and elbow problems with compassion and empathy. His world-class training allows him to offer his patients contemporary knowledge and technical expertise of the highest standard. He specialises in both open and arthroscopic (keyhole) shoulder and elbow reconstruction and joint replacement surgery.
He is an academic orthopaedic surgeon with a background in molecular medicine and biomechanics. He is the author of numerous scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals. He is the first fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons to complete a one-year fellowship at the world-famous Department of Orthopaedics, Bern University Hospital, Switzerland. He is also the first and only Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons to be awarded the prestigious Charles S. Neer Award for research in the field of shoulder surgery by the American Shoulder and Elbow Society in 2016. This is the highest honour in shoulder surgery research in the world.
Research
Associate Professor Sumit Raniga has developed a world-class orthopaedic research program that focusses on basic scientific research that improves patient outcomes. He has established and directs the MQ Health Translational Shoulder Research Program. He leads a multidisciplinary team that enables an intensive collaboration between surgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists, biomechanical engineers, and industry to improve patient outcomes through translational (basic sciences) orthopaedic research. He has been awarded research grants totalling $600,000 to build Asia-Pacific's first six degree of freedom, eight muscle actuated, in vitro cadaveric shoulder simulator. His team has now built the most advanced six degree of freedom, eight muscle actuated, in vitro cadaveric shoulder simulator in the world. This robotic cadaveric shoulder simulator moves just like our shoulder - with six degrees of freedom and eight muscles moving the joint. This sophisticated shoulder simulator will improve our understanding of shoulder biomechanics, develop new surgical techniques and rapidly evolve shoulder prosthesis design to improve patient outcomes.
